What is Shop Pay and How it Works - MageComp

As we discussed in the previous blog about How to use WhatsApp to Boost Your Business, faster customer service is everything today’s users want.

Now, when everything is getting faster and faster to meet the expectations of users, eCommerce checkout is no exception at all.

A seamless checkout process is as important as having a user-friendly interface for an eCommerce store. And payment gateways play an extremely pivotal role in ensuring a seamless and secure checkout experience for customers.

Payment gateways act as a bridge between merchants and their customers. These digital solutions process online transactions effortlessly, encrypting sensitive information to safeguard your store and customers against fraud.

Shopify supports multiple payment gateways, but today, we will discuss one of the most unique payment gateways of Shopify, Shop Pay.

What is Shop Pay?

Shop Pay is a highly optimized checkout solution developed by Shopify and launched in 2017. This solution is designed to simplify the checkout process of Shopify store owners and their customers as well.

Shop Pay allows customers to automatically save their email addresses, credit cards, and shipping and billing information. Shop Pay is one of Shopify’s payment methods through which customers can save their information for better checkout time. It saves payment information like:

  • Email Address
  • Billing Information
  • Shipping Information
  • Credit Card Details

This information will be used for autofilling checkout fields when it is used for future access to the site.

This improvement not only speeds up the checkout process but also enhances convenience, thereby increasing the conversion rate for online stores. Currently, approximately 1.7 million store owners rely on Shop Pay to facilitate a smoother and more efficient checkout for their customers.

How Does Shop Pay Work?

As we stated above, Shop Pay saves customers’ information, eliminating the customers’ need to enter their details every time they checkout from a Shopify eCommerce store.

Whenever a customer comes back to make another purchase in the same store or a different store using Shop Pay, all their details will be presorted, and this cuts down on the time taken to complete a purchase. It is most suitable for mobile users who prefer to type only a few details while using their small phone screens.

Shop Pay supports multiple languages like English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Finnish, Danish, Chinese, Czech, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, Norwegian, Polish, and Vietnamese.

Shop Pay Vs. Shopify Payments

Shop Pay and Shopify Payments are both part of the Shopify ecosystem only, yet they serve different functionalities. Shopify Payments is integrated into Shopify by default and is responsible for the collection and processing of payments.

However, Shop Pay is focused on making checkouts faster. The key difference lies in their roles: Shopify payments help in handling payments, while Shop Pay helps customers check out with ease.

Another advantage of Shopify Payments is that it includes various payment processors to make the payment process easier. This feature ensures that customers are facilitated with multiple payment options, improving their checkout experience along with increasing the Shopify store revenue.

In comparison to Shopify Payments, Shop Pay improves the customers’ checkout experience by making the checkout process faster and easier. It cuts down the steps needed for customers to finish their purchases, which leads to more sales and happier customers. Shop Pay is only available for merchants who sell in United States dollars (USD).

Another key difference is that Shopify Payments has transaction fees, while Shop Pay does not. With Shop Pay, merchants only pay the standard credit card processing fees from their payment provider.

You can easily add Shop Pay to high-converting pages made with Instant. Create custom sections and checkout experiences that boost your store’s performance—no coding needed!

How Does Shop Pay Work?

Here’s how Shop Pay works:

  • Customers fill in their shipping address and credit card details on the product page.
  • Shop Pay verifies the information by sending a security code to their email or phone and then saves the payment information for future use.
  • This means customers can use the same details to pay quickly with Shop Pay at any store.

Shop Pay keeps payment information secure on its PCI-compliant servers. Customers must enter their email addresses at checkout to save their payment details.

Customers can also download the Shop Pay App for a smoother shopping experience. The app is available for Android and iPhone. They can complete transactions easily using a debit or credit card or choose Shop Pay Installments.

Shop Pay Installments

Shopify Shop Pay has partnered with Affirm, allowing customers to opt for options like Buy Now Pay Later, both offline and online, allowing customers to pay for their purchases in easy instalments, which are required to be paid every two weeks.

To qualify for Shop Pay Installments, customers must meet these criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old and live in the U.S.
  • Use Shopify Payments and Shop Pay with U.S.-based businesses.
  • Have an order total between $50 and $3,000.

Shop Pay does not check credit scores for this payment option, but customers must verify their identity. If payments are missed or late, there are no fees or penalties, but customers may lose access to Shop Pay Installments.

There is also a premium version of Shop Pay. This version offers payment plans of up to 12 months, with monthly installments of up to 24 months (including interest) for orders between $50 and $17,500.

Conclusion

Altogether, Shop Pay is a specific advantage for Shopify store owners as it is a remarkable step forward in improving the shopping experience that provides speed, convenience and security for clients and store performance. So, by implementing Shop Pay, you are not only offering your customers a faster way to pay but also helping to reduce the checkout process time and increase customer conversion, which drives satisfaction.

In order to get the most out of Shop Pay, use it together with high-converting landing pages and product sections created with Instant design.
