While Magento remains one of the most powerful and robust eCommerce platforms on the web, it certainly has its downsides when it comes to organic search engine marketing and SEO. Still, Magento sites can rank very well in Google if you have the right SEO strategy behind them and compensate for Magento’s inherent SEO weaknesses.

1. Partner with a Magento SEO Company

Sure, you can handle your Magento’s site in-house or completely on your own, but you won’t maximize the platform’s ability. Magento is a great platform, but it is very technical, so we do recommend working with an SEO company that is proficient with Magento developers on hand. We recommend hiring an expert Magento SEO company that will be able to offer technically sound advice based on the nuances of Magento

2. Change your Default Settings

By default, you will want to change your “default page title” which will be used for the homepage if you haven’t set a proper title there. You can easily edit page titles for Products and Categories as well. You will want to do some keyword research and go through optimizing your most important products and categories with keyword-rich titles and meta descriptions. You can easily find where to edit products and categories within the Magento admin, simply navigate to Products > Catalog to edit product page titles or Products -> Categories to edit category page titles.

3. Remove “.php” From URL Structures

By default, Magento URLs will end in “.php”. To clean up your URLs for search engines and users alike, navigate to Store > Configuration > GEneral > Web > URL Options and select “Yes” for “Server URL Rewrites”.

4. Canonicalization

Duplicate content is an issue that plagues many websites, especially on Magento sites. This can come from paginated category pages or other pages with very thin or similar content. Essentially, a canonical tag will tell Google where the “real” version of a page exists that they should index, and tells them to ignore the non-canonical versions of said content.  Canonical tag settings can be found in the main Store > Configuration area.

5. Sitemap Creation

By default, Magento 2 doesn’t support automatic sitemaps. Your best bet is most likely to download an extension called Dynamic HTML Sitemap for Magento 2. You then submit your sitemap to Google Search Console to make sure all of your important pages are indexed.

6. Audit your Robots.txt File

Your robots.txt file is a way to tell bots and other crawlers which files and folders you want them to ignore when crawling your site. Simply go to your website’s domain /robots.txt to view your current robots file. You can use robots.txt checkers online to see if any important pages are being blocked by your robots.txt file, and then correct the issue if so. Robots files can be found in Magento very easily right in the admin, simply go to Stores > General > Design > Edit custom instruction of robots.txt file.

So, these was the best tips you should follow to improve the SEO performance of your site. There are many other things you can do to improve the SEO of your Magento site.
